Dan was born in New Haven, July 22, 1926, the son of the late Daniel A. and Dorothy (Kobey) Carboni, and was educated in West Haven and New Haven public and private schools. He had been employed by the American Cyanamid Co. (now Cytec Co.) of Wallingford. Following 40 years of service, he retired from his position as assistant laboratory manager in 1991, he had previously been employed at the A.C. Gilbert Co. in New Haven. He was a member of the Society of Plastics Engineers and (Color and Appearance Division), specializing in the field of coloring and testing of plastics. He was a former captain and drill master of the Yalesville Volunteer Fire Dept., and musician and commander of Post 45 Yankee Pedlars Drum Corps. More recently, he was a driver for the Volvo International Tennis Tournaments and Liberty Limousine Service. Mr. Carboni was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, Asiatic Pacific Campaign, having participated in the liberation of the Phillipine Islands, Korea, and China. He was a radioman aboard the flagship, USS Estes, which spearheaded the invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. This ship commanded the pre-invasion bombardment forces, while directing Marine and Army Signal Corps activities and carrier based air support units during the initial landings and subsequent enemy engagements. He remained with the Estes through the conclusion of World War II and post-war activities as Seventh Fleet Flagship, based in Shanghai, China. He was a member of the Iwo Jima Survivors Association and the recipient of The American Theater Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal with two Bronze Stars, Phillipine Liberation Medal, China Service Medal (Extended), Korean Liberation Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.

MERIDEN - Daniel J. Carboni, 79, of Christopher Lane, South Meriden, formerly of Johnson Road, Wallingford, proud, devoted and loving husband of 53 years of Jean (Munzu) Carboni, died, Monday, Aug. 22, 2005, at Masonic Healthcare Center in Wallingford.

In addition to his beloved wife Jean, he is survived by his sister, Carol DeRosa, of Wallingford; his niece, Lauren Torello; and nephews, Lynn Dumond and Joseph Santanello. He was the proud and loving father of his daughter, Jeanne DeBonis, and her husband, Jim, of Brecksville, Ohio; and three sons, Daniel G. Carboni and his wife, Mary of Bristol, Dennis J. Carboni, and his wife, Celia, of Needham, Mass, and Mark Carboni, of Willis, Texas. He was a loving, caring and devoted "Papa" to Caitlin, Daniel, and Matthew, of Bristol, and "Grampy" to Gabriella, and Sandro, of Needham, Mass.

His family will receive relatives and friends in The Yalesville Funeral Home, 386 Main St., Yalesville section of Wallingford, on Wednesday, from 6 until 8 p.m. Graveside Military Honors will be held on Thursday, at 11:30 a.m. at the State Veterans Cemetery in Middletown.
