Eugene Selby RM-3 1958-1962 - OI Div - Submitted 7/19/12
Hi my name is Eugene Selby and I served aboard The Grand Old Lady from March 1958 to April 1962. I reported aboard fresh out of boot camp as a seaman apprentice. I was assigned to the 2nd division. I volunteered for a drill team to march in the parade at Vancouver, Canada. We were trained to march by a marine assigned to the marine detachment on board. In Vancouver we marched in review for Princess Margaret. I was also a Boat Coxswain and was assigned to 1 of 2 LCVP's aboard. On a liberty run at Okinawa I damaged the screw, that was the end of my career as a coxswain. We also went to Portland, Oregon to the Rose Festival. I then transferred to OI Division for OJT as a radarman and spent the rest of my first hitch in OI division. I made the 1959 and 1961 cruises to WesPac. The time I spent on Estes was some of my favorite memories. I have located and corresponded with some of my shipmates. There are others I would like to correspond with but have not been able to locate them.
