USS ESTES AGC-12 |
John Bates - - - Submitted 09/10/11
I am seeking information about my Father, Donald D. Bates. I know from my Mother that he served on the USS Texas (BB-35), the USS Quincy (CA-71), and the USS Estes (AGC-12). He was allowed to wear the following Ribbons: American Defense, American Area, Asiatic Pacific (2 Stars), European African (3 Stars), Victory, and Good Conduct. As information, he was Honorably Discharged from the Navy on February 2, 1947. Daddy was a country boy from Dallas County, Alabama, near Selma. As the youngest of seven children, his parents did not give him a middle name, so he chose the initial "D" himself. He joined the Navy at 17 and was a Millwright, which led to his lifelong career at U. S. Steel in Fairfield, Alabama. He died a month after his 50th birthday in 1974.
Thank you in advance for any assistance you may offer. I also want to thank you especially for your service to our country on this Patriot's Day.
